South Africa is celebrating nearly a year without nationwide load shedding, but many Gauteng communities continue to feel the impact of Eskom’s targeted load reduction programme. This initiative aims to ease the pressure on aging infrastructure and overburdened local grids.
Understanding Load Reduction vs Load Shedding
Unlike load shedding, a national measure triggered by a lack of sufficient electricity, load reduction focuses on specific areas where illegal connections or outdated infrastructure cause localised strain. These outages can last for four to five hours, mainly affecting peak hours like early mornings and evenings.
Morning Power Cuts
The morning power cuts, which affect school runs and work commutes, are especially disruptive. The following areas will experience power cuts this week:
- Orange Farm and extensions
- Monise, Mokoena, Mavimbela, Zuma
- Ramakonopi, Ramakonopi East, Radebe, Sali Mngadi
- Ndhlazi, Cala, Hlongwane, Mfundo Park Extension 30B
- Mapetla, Protea South, Chiawelo, Moroka, Dhlamini
- Klipspruit, Kagiso, Khutsong, Tsakane Extensions 1, 3, 8, 11, 12
- Langaville Extension 3, Garankuwa extensions, Ivory Park extensions, Protea Glen, Rabie Ridge, Duduza
Residents in these areas should prepare for unplanned power cuts by charging devices, preparing meals ahead of time, and keeping children monitored during school preparations.

Evening Power Cuts
The evening power cuts, from 5pm to 10pm, disrupt household activities like dinner preparation, homework, and family routines. The affected areas include:
- City of Johannesburg Rural Lakeside, Orange Farm extensions, Stretford extensions
- Sharpeville and Sharpeville Outlying, Tshepiso, Elandsfontein AH
- Homestead Apple Orchards AH-West, Ironside AH-West, Vereeniging
- Drumblade, Klipview, Sebokeng, Vosloorus, Evaton Central
- Small Farms and Balmoral Estates
For many families, these evening power cuts are especially inconvenient, especially for students completing online assignments or households relying on electric cooking.
Additional Affected Areas (24th to 31st March)
In addition to the listed areas, the following communities will also experience load reduction during this period:
- Mofolo South
- Tsakane
- Zithobeni extensions
- Magagula Heights
- Spruit View
- Mngadi
- Chiawelo
- Langaville
- Diepkloof Zones 1–6
- Winterveldt extensions
- Orlando East
Prepare for Load Reduction
Eskom encourages all affected residents to check the official schedule, ensure devices are fully charged, and plan their daily activities around the power cuts. While these outages are an inconvenience, they are necessary to prevent long-term damage to local electricity networks and ensure a reliable energy supply for the future.

Load Reduction: A Reminder of Infrastructure Challenges
As South Africans become increasingly dependent on digital tools for work, school, and entertainment, the load reduction programme serves as a reminder that infrastructure challenges persist despite the absence of nationwide load shedding for almost a year. Households must stay vigilant and prepared.
